Why don't you write him a letter?
You said he is very busy and you two are not very close. This would be a great opportunity and a nice way of expressing your love, much better than any present you could buy. And he can keep the letter and read it over and over again, for the rest of his life.
Think about this and good luck!
And Happy Birthday to your Dad!:)

Buy him a gift - make it something that will make him laugh, but not corny/cheesy. It sounds like you don't know your dad well, but he'll be very disappointed if you turn up empty handed. Buy and write a card, too, preferably not one that says, "You're 40!!" on it in gaudy letters - that's dumb. If he has a preference for a kind of chocolate, liquorice, or a specific genre in music, favourite author, etc... If the weather's getting colder and he needs a scarf, for example, buy a decent quality one in his favourite colours. Don't go all out on someone you're not close too, in this case your father, but definitely get him something. Also for the cards, if he's into a particular sport or hobby, buying a hobby/sport-themed card might be good, too. But nothing tacky: businessmen know tacky.
Hope this helps, love electricarizona

Unless you are totally selfish..yes..buy him a gift.
How would you feel if you didnt get one from him on your b-day?
Tell him your present is the two of you going out to eat together because you never get to spend time with him and your relationship is fading. Not only will you get a good meal...your dad will LOVE it, and most likely hell probably pick up the check.
You will get along with your parents better when you get older and move out...trust me...and you will realize how much they did for you even though it doesnt seem like it now. Try patching it up..its a win win situation. Good luck.

Just an idea. Bake a simple cake with some wordings on it and give him a surprise. I'm sure he'll like it.
