As someone said it is a figure of speech.
Trust me, there is NO conscious recognition or belief of a higher power when I utter those words.

Atheists believe in a differeny form of God.They look for truth (God)within themselves.

just a force of habit. Hearing it said by others all our life.
It is also more socially acceptable than saying OH SHlT.
When a person sneezes, I do not say god bless you.

same reason you say, "oh brother." in mixed company. or you say, "Aww, man!" when you protest something, whether you are talking to a female or not. It's a great expression. Besides, I'm sure not ALL of them do that.

Someone saying "Oh My God" doesn't not constitute belief in a higher power, just the same as if I say "Fuçk this sh!t", it doesn't mean I want to copulate with excrement.

It's just a an expression, meaningless words, just like saying "Oh my gosh!" It doesn't mean you worship Gosh.

It's a learned, cultural exclamation. It has nothing to do with what one believes.
