Along with stone, mud and animal parts, wood was one of the first materials worked by early humans. I'm a brick layer and I have my own mason company, Please do not paint over your brick. You can use a man made stone over you fire place, there are millions of different colors. I have an old web site look at it , there is a fire place I have done outside, it is fake stone. hollingsworthmasonry.com.
Or you can tile over it. tile is an unlimited color as well. ohh I think there might be a fire place on the back of a house as well. both of those are fake stone.

On HGTV and Trading Spaces they do it all the time. I think they primer it first and then paint it pretty much any color they choose. Good luck on your remodeling

I'd paint it, but I'd stay with a more neutral color like a tan or store grey. I thought about painting mine, too. Thanks for reminding me!
