It could be a hundred things, but without going into too much detail, The quickest things to try are to unplug it, open it up find every fan in it (cpu, case, usually a couple on the power supply) and blow the dirt off them and their grills. I use 50-100 psi air compressor (don't let the tip touch the fan blades) Those cans of air might do ok too. Then, go get this thing and install it.

it puts an icon called startup in your control panel that lets you see whats running at startup and turn it off or back on if your wrong. Try turning some stuff off and rebooting. If you turn stuff off and it reappears, you got bugs, go get this

that's the quick fix, it's not perfect, but if I only have a little time to do something for someone, it's the most bang for your buck

Keep your computer in an area that stays at a constant, cool temperature and with a constant, low humidity.
Always use a surge protector.
Unplug your computer and clean it out with a can of canned air every 3-4 months. Every month if you have indoor pets.
Don't let it beat around.
Get some software that will monitor the temperatures inside your computer in case a fan goes out.

This should keep your system running good. Sometimes stuff just goes out though...
