A pencil skirt is straight from the waistband to the hem - think rectangle shaped (an a line skirt is wider at the hem like a capital letter A). They can be long or short, but generally fall right above the knee.
Pencil skirts generally don't work well on girls/women with curvy figures.

A pencil skirt is just a straight skirt. They can be any length. I'd say they probably look best on slim or slender people.

There are many many many pictures of pencil skirts. You can get a general idea of what kind of body they would fit on. They generally go down to the knees. Not usually shorter than that though. Made for a tall, skinnier woman.

If you're slim then yes, it will probably work great for you. Even better if you have nice legs.
