Janet Jackson gets scorned heavily and CBS gets sued for an accidental glimpse of her mammary area, but women can just whip out theirs in public and breastfeed their kids without hearing a word about it. There could be plenty of innocent children around to witness it, but she won't be punished. We can't have it both ways. Either we're going to be highly uptight about nudity and ban it in all places (make her go in the bathroom to do that), or we're going to be loose and allow it on television. Sure, anyone and everyone can see it on television, but it's the same way in public.

Ever heard of the F.C.C.? They maintain standards of decency on public broadcast airwaves. They've decided nudity isn't allowed on broadcast television. Breastfeeding in public isn't the same issue.

Hi...

I do not think it is fair. I do not think Janet Jackson should have gotten all the trouble she did.

I do have a question though. When did women's breasts become the enemy? We bind them, we hide them, we are made to feel embarressed about them if they are too small, too big, crooked, whatever. Why is this? Why does so much attention go to a part of the body few people see. Why is everyone worried if a woman's breast should make an appearence on TV or on the street?

This is something I ponder often... especially since I hate wearing bras. I'm claustrophobic and bras are very constrictive... they kind of hurt me too. However, in the name of good taste and decency, I wear one whenever I leave the house. (sigh)

There is nothing evil about a woman's breasts. A woman breastfeeding is as natural and normal as eating. There is nothing shameful about it. The religious "right" in the US is making a big deal out of nothing. A split-second of Janet's boob was blown completely out of proportion by crazy people.

"But, what about the children????" -says the idiot

Kids don't freak out over boobs, not unless you teach them that it's a big deal. Boobs are boobs, legs are legs, elbows are elbows, every woman has them, its not a big deal. Kids don't care.

And for the adults...
If the site of a breastfeeding woman works you into a frenzy, you have a personal issue. It's not the woman's fault, that's your problem.

If people can't stand to look at a woman's body, why don't we mandate that all females have to wear full body burkas. Let's only allow eyeballs to show, lest some man somewhere get sexually aroused. Oh wait, we are against that here in the USA, aren't we? Sometimes I wonder....

WOULD YOU EAT IN THE RESTROOM? Yes, it is wrong for Janet Jackson to expose her breast on national television. No, it is not wrong for women to sit and nurse their child. I nursed my 3 year old and am now nursing a 4 month old and have never exposed a breast in public. I do feed my child in public. Have you ever thought about why God gave you breasts? They are there to feed your child. Not show the world. I have been breastfeeding for 14 months total, and have never shown a breast. I sure every woman who breastfeeds has never either. I have only had one negitive response nursing and it was from someone simple minded.

Janet Jackson was the victim of a MUCH larger battle, between the conservative right wing "censor everything, especially if it's even remotely reminds you of your sexuality"......and the more liberal left wing "Let's show gay goat sex on TV in place of afterschool specials".

Both of those are extreme exaggerations (especially the 2nd one), but it's definately going on. Janet Jackson just happened to be unlucky enough to get caught in the crossfire.

In truth people are condemming the nursing mother too. There was a question I posed that had an article that made mention to people finding it in bad taste to show a child breastfeeding on a baby magazine that was given out at baby stores and doctors offices.

Wow I have never though about it that way. But you know how the world is, the rich and famous never get punished.
And really you should know this by now, life isn't fair, it never will be.

i have to disagree with you. mothers breastfeeding aren't trying to attract attention to their breasts or trying to send any sort of sexual message. but janet jackson actually just exposed herself i front of millions of people for no reason, accident or not.
