Processor and memory both affect the speed of your computer. Adding more RAM (memory) is a pretty simple process and can have a huge impact on your computer's performance. You don't give any specs on your computer, but if it has 128 MB or 256 MB of RAM, you'll see a big jump in performance by bumping it up to 512 MB or 1 GB. CPU's are tougher to upgrade (not to mention expensive) and it isn't always possible to upgrade them.

Well i will tell you an Easy way :
"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""
To speed up your system try these,
Remove all the XP looking effects from the PC, this could be done easily, first go to System Properties, right click "My Computer icon" > Then select "Advance" tab > Then select "Settings" under Performance > then click the Option "Adjust for Best Performance" & Apply & OK. This will reduce a Lot of Virtual memory occupied by the system. Also disable cursors & all the other Task running programs such as Weather bug & all that these are not relevent softwears as they eat the CPU & Memory. All i have in my Task bar is "The Sound Controller", "The Virus Guard", "The Network(DSL) & The MSN Messemger" Thats all. Have a decent & A sleek environ ment. Also make sure your hard disk won't exceed 80% of the total space, I refer to the OS installed hard disk, say you have Installed Windows XP to C: drive & the total capacity of this is 10GB, Make sure your dpace dont exceed 9GB on C: always keep 1 or 2GB for the system to function. dont exceed this limit. If you need more efficiency Increas RAM. If you have further clarification please feel free to contact me anytime.
Regards,-Seyan.

Lots of things affect computer speed. Even within broadband there are different speeds of service, for example, verizon offers slow and fast broadband; your processor and memory can have an effect; make sure you delete content and do disk defrags regularly. Also, it can depend on what operating system you use and what software products you have loaded; if your drive is pretty full, you can get an external drive pretty cheaply

Disk defragmenting really doesn't speed up your computer in my oppinion! The main computer speed things is the amout of RAM, and the video card. If the video card is weak... it will use your RAM. So I would recommend going to tigerdirect.com and buying like 1 GB of RAM (make sure it fits your computer before you buy it)... you can probably call them and they would know. its very easy to insert into your computer! Then maybe replace your video card with something like 256 mb... or 512 mb. Processor speed also helps, but assuming you don't want to spend all your money upgrading.... those are the two things i'd recommend.
Secondly, there are many ways to make your computer boot faster... http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1558,1786122,00.asp

if you use it allot you can use tuneup utilities 2006 http://tucows.com/preview/317392
this will cleanup wasted memory and get rid of useless junk running on your computer and the program it comes with called "tuneup meoptimizer" it is second to buying more mem.
