I have a relatively new computer with WIN XP on it. I have a older computer with WIN98 on it. I would like to use a crossover cable for transferring stuff from the old one to the new one. Can anyone suggest how to hook it up?

Just hook them together from one NIC to the other NIC and use the network wizards in the control panel to network them together. You will have to share the folders that you wish to transfer.

One end of cable goes to winxp network card, another to win98 network card. Set static IP addresses for both pcs. Make sure computers are in the same workgroup. Disable firewalls on both pcs. Share folders....

in reality you might get much more troubles before it would work for you. These are just a basic steps to follow.
If you have a cd-writer on win98 and need to transfer your data only once, its just easier to burn it on cds and transfer to winxp system, then fighting with networking.

Better you connect the two computers by cross cables

start- settings - network connections
In that Left corner, Create new connection - next - Setup an Advanced Connection - Connect directly to the computer -By guest or host

Then, Transfer your files

if both computers are on the internet through a router, you can just make both part of a network. Start with the WinXP machine, and it will lead you through the process. Once both machines show on each others' network, transferring files is just like moving files on the computer you are using at the moment.

there are several ways to do it... one, by networking it (as shown by previous answers). the other, use the hard disk with win98 as a slave..... config your settings as having two hard disks (one as a slave)... transfer would be a cinch then....
