The maximum distance is by using CAT 5e/Any ethernet cable. The distance for this is 100metres or 300feet. This can be extended by having a router and another 100metres of cable, although extension too far using this method will degrade the signal greatly.

A network cable longer than 100metres alone will have problems and may not work at all due to signal loss

According to the Ethernet specs, the maximum length of a CAT5 cable is 100M or approximately 328 feet.

Beyond that, you run the risk of signal loss and other complications.

This is due to the length of time it takes electricity to travel over the lines. If it were to be any longer than this, then your network *may* still work, but could have problems. Due to the increased latency along the line, any cable longer than 328 feet may cause a breakdown in packet "collision detection" and cause a flaky network segment.

depends on the cable use....

a utp cable has 100 meters as its maximum distance
a cable base 2 has 200 meters as its maximum
a cable base 5 has 500 meters as its maximum
a fiber optic has 3000 meters (but too expensive)

ciao...
