My son turns 10 on sunday. We want to buy him a drum set. Not a cheap one. Something from a music store. Any suggestions? We don't want to spend more than $500.00.

I guess that I could go up to about $700.00

Your gonna have a hard time finding New drums for that price.I would get him a used 5 pc set.Stay with standard sizes(22 inch base drum)so in the future you can add on.It will be hard to add to odd sized (toddler)drums in the future.

Buy a second hand set.....
Old beat up drums have street cred anyway......
I used to play... never very well mind you.....
If I was to buy another set I would buy a smaller set...
IE i went out and brought a tama rock star and I thought it was cool that the drums were really big and deep and the only way I could ever get them to sound any good was to hit them very hard.
Where as i believe a smaller kit sounds better. (Just my opinion)
The normal bass drum size is 22 inch see if you can find a 18 or 20... having said that don't get him one of those micro kid's sets as he will silently hate you for it in a year or 2....
I recon brand names don't mean too much if i were you i would buy beat up drums for really cheap and then concentrate your funds where they will make the most difference.... A good snare drum and a fancy hi-hat (one of the more modern systems) a nice kick pedal is pretty good too: something with fuid in it to make it nice and smooth and a set of cymals that does not sound like your banging 2 tin lids together.
I think I just blew your budget....

That is not enough money for a Wall-Mart set sorry. Any way go to Google Video and look up 12 year old Tony Royster Jr. Watch the video and see a real drummer and drum set. (or go to drums sets) They start at 499$

the only set that you're gonna get NEW for under $500.00 (w/a little hardware) is a "Pacific" drum set. you can find one at guitar center (you can talk down the salesmen). if you want a DECENT set, you will have to spend a little more for a "Tama Swingstar" or maybe a "Pearl Export".... but not much more.
