I think anyone that states Dell or HP shouldn't have any business even telling you. A lot depends on the model, subsequently the components involved. Perhaps warranty service and support. If you want the best together for the best price without having to worry about sub-par parts, it's best to build it yourself. It's easy and you know what you're getting. It's like saying Chevy or Ford. Both have and have had sucky vehicles. It's too general of a statement.

HP is better in my opinion. Especially the monitors. Dell is so cheap because they lack quality. Granted they are know for customer service but HP customer service has always been great to me and you get a great quality computer. Next week at costco they have an HP with 250GB hard drive and 19" wide screen monitor with TV tuner for $799.

hp, but they both arent very good, you should buy parts off of newegg.com even if you dont know anything about computers. Its very cheap this way, faster computer, more reliable, and not hard to install, may only take you 2-4hours.
Remember to buy...
Hard drive 80 or 120 gig from seagate or maxtor
Videocard 64mb or 128mb
dvd/cd-rom/burner
CPU (processor), an AMD sempron 3000+ will do you good
Motherboard gigbytes are nice, same with biostar
Case, make sure it comes with a power supply
operating system, XP pro or home works
This is really the way to go, its much more affordable, faster, and its not too hard to build.
If you follow the few instructions in the manuals and be careful with the parts then youll be fine.
You will receive your products in 2-5days
Newegg.com
You Will Not be satisfied with a DELL! or HP
they are built to fall apart, cheap parts, slow, and very expensive.

I have a HP and I have loved it. A bunch of friends have had Dells and hated them. This is just annecdotal evidence, but I would recommend an HP.

I would have to say Dell. HP uses lower grade components on most PC models. I personally prefer to build my own using genuine Intel boards and CPUs. Comparable price to Dell, but much higher quality, unsurpassed tech support at Intel website, 3 year warranty. And no, I am not an Intel shareholder.

Computer brands don't matter at all. The parts in them are all the same. Whether you have HP or Dell or Compaq, it's got the same computer parts. ie Intel AMD Western Digital.
I personally can't stand either because they always load the machines up with gigs of sucky and useless programs.
Go with the one that saves you the most cash.

I'm NOT trying to be mean, but that really is like asking, "Which was better, the Edsel or the Yugo?"
I've never known anyone who had an HP who was happy with it, ditto Dell, and now both these two and Gateway have transferred all of their troubleshooting calls overseas...which means you'll be trying to explain your problem to someone who hasn't been speaking REGULAR English NEARLY as long as you have, and yet you'll be trying to "talk computer" to them....
Advice: go to http://www.tigerdirect.com and get an AMD-built PC for $300-500, with bells and whistles. Not just with their processor, but their build. MUCH safer because of the way they route, MUCH faster [regardless of what spec-speeds SAY], and ten more pages of better all around.
This AMD-built never sticks, never gets corrupted [on its own], and FLIES.
Sorry, this is all just truth.

Dell is WAY better.
better customer service (number 1 in customer service for LOTS of years in a row)
better computers as far as hardware quality, compatibility and upgrade-ability
HP just really, really sucks. way too much proprietary stuff. less upgrade capabilities to their computers. WAY too much crap pre-loaded on the computers.
I recently had a friend who bought a new HP. I disabled several thing in Windows startup options that were COMPLETELY useless, and freed up over 50 megs of RAM right away.

I myself have a dell xps 200 and i must say that i have had zero problems with it to this point. It also has a 3 years extended warranty so if any part on it breaks down all i have to do is call and they will send someone out to replace the part, they also have great customer support with any questions you may have.

I would say HP because of its reliability.... but if HP has more control over theor PC...for example...if you change your memory or hard drive ..HP systems will stop running because they hard program their mother boards to detect changes and stop them...WHY??? so you will have to go back to HP for the change and pay THEM the money. Plus the Recovery CDs, you can only buy from them. So if you want a FREE system... consider others than HP.
