I disagree with the death penalty. If you think killing's wrong, then it should be wrong on all accounts or you're just like the murderer.
For all the people whining about their hard earned taxpayer's dollar paying for the murderer's lifesentence--consider that there's far, FAR more people in jail for drug charges (and there are a LOT of them) than for homicide. You're paying for them, so why aren't you wondering about drug law reform? It's a different issue, but it intertwines with the problem.
Killing them doesn't set an example, all it does is give the family/victim a sense of petty vengence--it's not worth that. I imagine when these people kill their victims, they don't consider the consequences, and they never will--so what's the point? I'm of the idea that it'd be nice for the worst ones, the would-be-death-row-inmates, to spend the rest of their lives in isolation, just... thinking about what they've done and what they're going to be doing for the rest of their pitiful life.
And where does this "eye for an eye" stuff end? If you kill someone in a bar-room brawl, when you were both drunk and disorderly, do you deserve to die, too? If your lover cheated on you and you killed them in a fit of passion, is that on par with a serial killer?
And what if you're wrong?
If someone in my family was killed, I would want their murderer to rot in prison for as long as possible (to answer that part of your question), but I wouldn't want to kill them back. That strikes me as childish, and once I got past the fit of passion (which we'd all go through--I'm not thinking I wouldn't be furiously upset), I would think rationally.
Anyway, I'm off my soapbox now. You know my answer. ;)

I think in general almost all think killing is wrong, I hope, lol. But as for the death penalty, I do agree with it. Not necessarily as "revenge", but as a means to an end. I think penalties should be extreme in some circumstances in order to curb the criminal activities of others, and to give peace to the injured party. How can they ever move on with their lives knowing their loved one is dead and the person that took their live is living basically responsiblity free.

People agree with the death penalty because they don't have to carry it out. Someone else performes the role of the "Bad Man".

I believe that killing is less wrong than the law would agree with. Some people reach a point in their life where the suffering that their continued existence causes overshadows any moral objection to ending their lives.

I don't wish the death penalty on anyone, I think it's wrong, it puts you on the same level as the person who hurt your family or whoever.

I think the death penalty is stupid. How can you make a person suffer for what they did by killing them? You can't. Your only putting them out of their misery. Even if you do think they are going to hell in the afterlife. Why not give them hell on Earth and teach them while your doing in it. Help them first.

Killing is wrong.
That's why we need to enforce the death penalty to stop the killing (crime).

An eye for an eye. i do believe in the death penalty. why should tax payers support murderers for the rest of their lives. or at least until they get paroled (about 5 years). i just isn't right.
