i'm 18 weeks pregnant and i just had my first ultrasound. my baby has a choroid plexus cyst. i've read about them, and now they're fairly common, and usually go away before its born. but i've also read its associated with edwards syndrome and downs syndrome. no one in my family has ever had edwards syndrome, but i have an aunt with downs. does that increase my babies risk? and does no one having edwards syndrome mean the risk for it is lower? i'm having trouble finding information about this.

You should really talk with your Dr. They can evaluate what to do. As far as I know they use correlation not causation when determine when CPC is present. What that means is a women's child might have downs because they found a CPC. Because statistically speaking X amount of downs are born with CPC.

In otherwords they use it as an indicator that downs might exist. As a result they might have you do an amnio. It seems like the way they handled this has changed in the last few years. If your Dr. is fairly progressive they might be up on this. If they aren't you might want to question them further. Of course I am not a Dr. and you should do a lot of reading on that site.

Goto the CPC site there is a lot of information there.

For example I found this site there:

A choroid plexus cyst does NOT cause learning problems or mental retardation and are not cancer.

With ^that^ being said about it not causing mental retardation I would assume that it does not cause Edwards Syndrome/Downs Syndrome. But I am not a Doctor so I can't be 100% positive on that.

I additionally had my blood experiment come again confident for downs syndrome. For me I had a one million in one hundred ten threat of getting a DS little one which was once so terrifying and annoying. I was once despatched to genetic counsiling and I was once instructed I wanted an amnio to verify one hundred% that I did have a DS little one. But I refused it seeing that I'm wholly afraid of the ones enormous needles going directly into my stomach and I did not care besides. Whether my little one had DS or now not I was once nonetheless going to like her so for the leisure of my being pregnant we stayed confident and confident and my little lady was once born flawlessly common. She's now three and simply began preschool and loving it. So do not fear and in case you need to recognize for certain ask your physician approximately an amnio which I was once instructed is one hundred% correct. Good Luck...
