if on up hill I usually put in 1st with parking/emerg brake..when down hill its in R with parking/emerg brake..is this correct?..or should i leave out of gear with just parking/emerg brake on? Thanks for the help

Yes, you should always park with the rear brake and engage in 1st gear or reverse gear along up or down hill. This is in case the brake fault, the gear will prevent the car from moving due to the slope.

You should use the emergency brake whenever you park always. If not the car can pop out of gear on its own and go rolling whereever it wishes. It does help to leave it in gear and have the brake on. 2 sources of safety then.

Yes use the emergency brake and leave it in gear and I have always heard my brother in law say (he lives in a very hilly area) that when he parks on a street he always turns his wheel toward the curb in the direction the car would roll just as an added precaution.

what you've been doing is exactly what you need to do on a downhill uphill and flat. having only the emergency brake on when your car isn't on a flat surface can be dangerous if your brake is old and is wearing out. continue with what you've been doing, have both safety measures in place.

It is better safe than sorry. Go with e-brake on both with 1st for uphill and reverse for downhill.

always put the e brake on,, it will help the tranny in the long run
