You're not supposed to, but I found out the hard way that birth control doesn't always work the way it should.
Follow the directions exactly. I'm assuming the one week it's out should be the week you have your period.
In my case, I discovered that antibiotics interfere with birth control pills.

the ring in this way, is the same as other forms of contraception. during the week off, you can get pregnant if you have unprotected sex. during that week, you should always use a backup method of contraception.
