the most postive way of identifying a goldfish's gender is during spawning time. the males will develop white spots on their gills and pectoral. they are called breeding tubercles. females will be plumper in order to store eggs.

If it is a goldfish (it sounds suspiciously like it might be) as it matures, a male will start having small white spots on its gill covers. Females do not get them.

There is a parasite called ich that manifests itself as small white spots, but they occur all over the fish.

I have no idea and I can't imagine why you really need to know. Let it be what you want it to be. Even if you put other fish in with it it shouldn't be an issue.

Hold up a picture of Ariel (the Little Mermaid). If it stares at her breasts, it's a male. If it rolls its eyes and says, "Those are obviously fake," it's female.
