If you have a gun and you want to get rid of it, can you just throw it in the trash?

Regardless of the legality, it's horribly irresponsible. Bring it to the nearest police station (unloaded and in a box or case of some sort) and just ask them to dispose of this gun. They will take it no questions asked.

Try taking it to a pawn shop first you may be able to get a little money from the deal. Or give it to me. ;-)

Absolutely no. Contact your local police and ask if they have a gun program for the community, to turn the gun over to them. You can (if the weapon is legal), turn the weapon in to a gun dealer/ selling to a reputable gun shop. But please, even if the weapon is in poor shape, missing pieces.... it could get into the hands of one who knows how to repair and use it in a crime. Remember, guns have serial numbers and may be traced to the proper owner. Smart question, wish more would be responsible as you to ask. Good Luck!

That would not be smart. Somebody could get the gun, use it in a crime and it could be traced to you. I would take it apart, remove the firing pin, and throw it away in pieces in different places.

Or turn it in when some group is sponsoring a guns for cash drive (or some other freebie).

YES!!! Very Illegal! Especially if someone finds that gun, uses it and the Police find your prints on it, Your new girlfriend will be Bubba in prison. If it's not a legally registered gun, then there are some anonymous anti crime/violence places you can drop it off at.

I'm pretty sure you could be held civilly responsible for negligence if someone used that gun in a crime down the road.

Legally, you would have to check your State Laws. In Michigan you may be held legally responsible if it is a pistol that is still registered to you. Need more specifics.

Yes, but it may be a better idea to bring it to the police station. If someone goes through the trash or dump, takes the gun and kills someone, you would be questioned because you still technically own the gun (duh). The police station near me will take guns and recycle them for parts or something. Or sell it :-D

It is legal depending what state you live in. But I think it probaly be better to pawn or do somethin else with it because it could get into the hands of a minor which is very unsafe

i bet it is but i dont think its a good idea take it to a police office or sporting goods store and see if they can help dispose of the gun in a safer manner

Illegal - check out the concept of depraved indifference - its certainly not resposible. Give it to your local policeman. He will be glad to take it off the street.

What if someone else finds it, but you're still the registered owner of it?

Turn it in to the cops
