I have lived in apartments all my life, and never had walls this thin. I can hear my neighbors talking, listening to TV, opening things, sneezing, and coughing. They are not being loud, but everything comes through the wall. The apartment is uninhabitable in this state.

Will the management company be willing to move me into a different apartment in the complex? Can I get out of my lease?

They probably won't move you, but it's certainly worth a try! When you ask, be sure to be tactful. If you are accusatory, you probably won't get what you want. You could say something about how much you'd been looking forward to moving into this building but that there has been much more noise than you expected so you are hoping that there is a quieter apartment that you could take. If your lease doesn't promise peace and quiet, you probably cannot get out of it. In the meantime, placing matresses or foam against the walls will insulate the walls from the sound. (People are giving away old matresses all the time on Craigslist.com) I know the mattresses are ugly but you could drape them with pretty quilts or curtains. If all else fails, you could sublet your apartment to someone else who is less bothered by the noise, and you can live elsewhere. Good Luck!

It might be very hard to get out of your lease, and I suspect that all of the other units will be similar in construction. I don't know what you could do. I can imagine how awful that must be. Do you have trouble sleeping too? You could use earplugs when you sleep but that wouldn't be very satisfactory for everyday when you just want to enjoy your apt. I hope you can find a good solution! I have heard that you can use white corn starch to adhere fabric to your walls. It makes it stick but does not cause any damage to the walls. You might want to read up on that and try to put some up as it may help absorb a little bit of the noise! I think you have to use cotton fabrics and you soak them in the starch and then when you leave, you just pull it off and wash the fabric and use it again if you want. I heard about this from a woman who's husband was a soldier and they always lived in military housing, so she developed this idea to add color to the walls.

i dont think that moving to a different apartment in the same complex will do any good as the buildings are probably all the same and if you cant get out of your lease put egg crates or blankets on your walls to thicken them up. and if that dosent work do something to get evicted if its that bad

What about a sound machine or fan. My roomate uses a fan to drown out my tv in the am (i work nights and am up a few hrs while she is trying to sleep) and I notice when it is on in the living room and we are trying to watch a movie we have to turn it off to hear the movie.
