My aunt was driving with a gasoline can in the back of her van. A car ran a red light and she had to slam on her breaks which sent the gas can tumbling. They spilled about a cup of gas all over their carpet and are not sure how to get it out. They've poured baking soda on it to pull up some of the gas. They are worried about putting water on it (I'm not sure why.) Does someone have any idea how they would pull the gas out of their carpet and get rid of the smell?

We had a can leak 3" of gasoline the floor in the front of my car. First we went to the car wash, cleaned what was there out and vaccumed the water out...then used baking soda to absorb some of the smell and lastly, We ended up going to the local janitorial supply and getting enzymes and cleaner to neuralize the smell and detergent to clean it out of the carpet.

The gas should evaporate in a short time. If it is only about a cup full it should not take long. The best thing to do would be try to blot up as much as possible with a towel and ventilate the van by opening the doors and windows and by all means keep fire sparks and any other thing that could set the gas off away from the van. DO NOT TRY TO VACUUM IT UP WITH A SHOP VAC as the motors in these devices have electrical brushes that spark with the motor running.

I asked a chemical engineer what made gasoline smell so bad. His response, "all those dead dinosaurs". Never got a straight answer from him. I suspect it comes from the sulfides in the fuel.
