With more awareness and education, there will be more usage of Anti depressants.

Mental health has come unto its own in the last couple of decades. I don't condone just popping a pill to cure depression....I still believe in self help, exercise, diet and managing the depression without medication. This can be very affective but it takes disciple and taking a pill is so much easier for some....

I have seen anti depressants dramatically change a depressed person. Do I do feel it is over prescribed. We haven't studied these medications long enough to know the long term side effects....

Its not a cure all, but certainly if prescribed right can be an affective way to manage depression.

Culture Shock.

In the 80's it was predicted by Sociologists that many Americans would fall into culture shock in the next two decades. The shock is caused by societies rapid shifts and changes since the advent of the household computer. People cant keep up with all the shifts. The human mind needs a sense of security and stability to relax. As the world changes so rapidly many people go into over load. When a person regrets lossing things they get depressed. Culture Shock = Antidepresants.

The stresses in America have risen because of the fast paced society. With the introduction of anti-depressants at cheaper costs covered by insurance, everyone will be depressed if there is a happy pill available. Whether they are clinically depressed or not.

I have a personal theory that it is due to all the hormones that are being pumped into our animals/meats.

I have cut way back on red meats for this reason. Since I live at the beach and seafood from the ocean is low in mercury, I have been 'trying' to not eat red meat at all actually.

To the person below me, that is bologna. I know grown women and men ages 40+ who are sufferring from extreme depression that has just seemed to come out of nowhere. Some of them had terrible hard childhoods that made them tough. They can't understand it. That is why I actually started trying to figure it out myself.

Well you have to understand the major Drug companies strategies. Their business analysis say that the best way for them to stay in business is to bring certain certain illnesses to the public attention and market and offer cures. Lets face it if there aren't any new diseases then we don't need a lot of new drugs. I mean there are plenty of drugs that help sexual problems but its only been the last 5 years that we started seeing commercials for them everyday. And my new favorite one is ' Restless Leg Syndrome ' WTF is that? Try this....go into a Doctors office and mention you've been feeling a little depressed lately, see how long it takes before you have a free trial pack of something in your hand for it. So my guess the reason its gone up so much is because of the marketing campaign of the drugs that treat it.

Because of brain-washing by pharmaceudical companies telling every person that they have a disease and need to buy this or that medication... Ever notice the side effects are worse than the original problem? Oh, you have a slight headache, take this pill, but it might give you severe blood clotting, hernias, or death.

People have become weaker as a whole. Parents as a whole have robbed their kids of mental toughness. The pamper and get them whatever they want, dont discipline them, and expect them to be able to cope with the real world.
