It's called the photic sneeze reflex. It doesn't happen to everyone, which is why some people think you're crazy for asking the question. But it's real.

Hi Everyone,
I've heard a variation on the "Photic Sneeze Effect" described in Wikipedia. Here's their take on the "tear" theory:

"The speed of the reflex seems to favour the first theory, as it happens much too quickly for tears to be generated and drain into the nose"

What I heard was that squinting in the bright sunlight puts pressure on the tear glands in the sinus cavity, thus causing tears to flow at a fast enough rate to account for the speed of the response. Thus, if the "squeeze" theory is correct, it's just as likely to cause a rapid response as the "optic nerve" theory.

What I know from experience is that once the sneezes start coming on, it's bright, I'm squinting, and my sinuses are full of fluid. So, who really knows what wins the race in terms of making you sneeze? I suppose you'd have to do controlled experiments in which some subjects are exposed to bright light and some are told to squint in a dark room!

Try getting funding for THAT one!

Uh, if you do get the money, will you have any openings for clinical technicians? Can't hurt to take a shot....

Ur 'condition' is not abnormal at all. This reaction to sudden bright light is a reflex that has roots in early human history. This is the reason why some people sneeze just after waking up in the morning.

Wow!

I just got done watching Benchwarmers and the one guy's brother was afraid of the sun.

The sun probably hates you. Maybe its Jesus' shine that is after you.

I just sneezed answering this question? OMG!

That behavior is actually genetically determined! Some people sneeze when exposed to bright light, others don't. I don't know what the phenomenon is called.

your allergic to it. lol no it happens to me to. I was told it was because our eyes are connected to our sinuses and the heat we absorb in our eyes tickles the nasal cavity.
