It's an athletic activity, but NOT a sport, sorry. Even though there are competitions, there are also competitions in chess and that's not a sport either.

If marching band isn't a sport, then neither is cheerleading. And if you don't think marching band is a sport, then look it up. It requires you to play an instrument (correctly) while knowing the number of counts between moves, where you're going, if you fit into the picture, huffing it across a field quickly holding heavy instruments, keeping tempo, watching the drum major to keep time, keeping the top of your body toward the home sideline at all times (regardless of where your feet are going)... SO much. So if band isn't a sport, neither is cheerleading. And yes, band dorks DO run laps!

If you mean competitive cheerleading, then it is competitive exercise.
Don't get me wrong, cheerleaders are athletes, but anything where two or more people compete seperately to get the highest score is not a true sport, regardless of how athletic they need to be. In order to be a sport, there must be two or more people competing directly against each other, at the same time, with an objective way to know who wins.

I personally hate cheerleading, but it is definitely a sport, just as gymnastics is. Anyone who says otherwise could not imagine the amount of strength and discipline it takes to learn the moves involved.
Just like in gymnastics, you must learn to defy gravity to flip, twist and jump at the same time! In my high school, both the cheerleader and gymnasts spent much of the training time doing strength exercises that most men wouldn't be able to keep up with.

I believe it's both. A sport involves exercise. Cheerleading is a sport to me. I don't know why people don't think it's a sport, but it is. Even my coach for P.E said it was and he hates cheerleading. He thinks it should not be a sport, but it is.
