She was the first Queen who ruled by herself because she didn't want to give up power. She gave religous toleration because she was widely protestants. In the golden age she was one of the greatest monarchs. She listened to her people's needs and didn't supress them like other rulers. She made England a succesful power country. And she made the brittish navy more powerful during the age of exploration.

Elizabeth I was one of the greatest monarchs to ever sit on the throne of England, if not one of the greatest monarchs the world has ever known. Under her reign, England began its ascension to being a world power (which would come to its greatest fruition during the reign of Queen Victoria during the 19th century, the height of power of the British Empire). The Spanish Armada was defeated by Sir Francis Drake and his Elizabethan Seadogs (the Spanish Armada was an invasion fleet meant to attack the British Isles... luck, weather and all-out gutsiness aided Raleigh in defeating them). She was a patron of William Shakespeare, and the theatre flourished under her reign. Yes, she was known as the "Virgin Queen" for being unmarried... if you want a fun (fictional) take on how she was meeting her "private" needs, see the film "Shakespeare in Love."

Rent the movie Elizabeth--that woman got around. I also heard that in her whole lifetime she only took 3 baths or something.
