It's ok for Britain to no longer be a superpower as it was during the first half of the 20th century, but I believe that it's not ok for it to become a servant for the US. Can someone tell me what exactly made Britain a marionette in the hands of the US and why Blair is working as a butler for Bush?

"Maggie, what have we done to England?"... Roger Waters.

budding author, I'm not a Maggie lover... this is a verse from a song by Roger Waters, he was wondering why England is so fu--ed up! So he's asking Maggie what have they done to England. Another interesting verse is "Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome, Reagan and Haig,
Mr. Begin and friend, Mrs. Thatcher, and Paisly, Mr. Brezhnev and party, Mr. Brezhnev and party. The ghost of McCarthy, The memories of Nixon... etc." Then the following verse he screams "Did they expect us to treat them with any respect?"
See, there's no respect to Maggie :)

Strange that you should post this question just as I was wondering the same thing! I cant answer your question, but its been a long time.
I would like to disassociate my self from your 'Maggie loving ' bit, I have always hated the woman, and many other Brits still feel the same, that's why I can never see the Tories getting back in power, she was also a 'lap dog' to the USA government.
So having got that off my chest! I was trying to remember when the Brits last ever opposed the American Government.
Also please note here I am referring only to the American Government, not the American people, who I have a lot of respect for, so now my 'American a55 licking bit ' is over, back to the question.
I can remember a lot of hassle over the Suez canal when the American Government told us to give it back and to vacate the spot, which we did without hardly a murmur!
Since then I cant recall any time that the British government has voiced any real opposition to the USA government!
Some one hopefully will be able to answer your question, and save me 5 points for having to ask, so I will be watching with interest!
You and I could possibly get on if you were not such a 'Capitalist Maggie lover'
But good luck in your quest! I enjoyed the question.
Sorry if I implied you were a Maggie lover, the song bit was way over my head!

In the hands of Bush would be after the Bush administration was imposed on the USA by a high court judge, sounds as democratic as Blair asking us about the EU.

We have been "friends" with the states since the second war, but this is more like joining the local bullies gang to prevent yourself being beaten up rather than for real friendship.

The groveling only really started after Blair came to power and has only really been apparent since he took our army into an illegal war. However since the USA has been at war with its ideological opposition, as long as they are weaker that them, since 1945 and the rise of communism I would think that most of these incursions have been illegal.

I also suppose that with the American military on UK soil the government is rather in a cleft stick because I would not put it past Bush to launch against us if Tony doesn't do as he is told.

So that s my thoughts on the matter and the sooner the US forces ar gone from here and our own troops brought back to defend us the better.

Maybe there is some hidden agenda. I know as a super power Britian had had it after the Suez Crisis when we almost went bankrupt and the yanks offered no support (lets be honest why should they lend Britian millions and millions when they already had been propping them up for the past few years). the way they humilated Britian and France by telling them to leave the area was done to show the world that the USA was now in charge. France in my opinion took the correct stance of America. Britian from that day decided to grovel. However we did not support Vietnam when the yanks wanted us. (which is propably why they lost).
As for the past few years and Afganistan and Iraq, you don't know what Britain got out of it. I know we are still paying for WW2 and the Falklands wars, so maybe Bush said "support us and we will wipe of 'x' amount of your war debt that you owe us", or we will give you 30 Apache helicopters. I don't know, you never know what the hidden agenda is do you.
I think that we should dump America and go elsewhere, but we rely on them for so much, like our Nuclear deterent which is more important than ever now Iran and North Korea want to develop them.
Mind you I would not want to rely on solely Europe which I hate the idea of.

I't not so simple, what we don't know is what the likes of Bush has said to Blair. He may have said stuff like if we don't join him it will be very difficult for us to do any business with America, or suddenly there might be a lot of extra security measures against us when we try to visit. there is losts of pressure he can bring to bear.
its all very well if a mate says lets go down the pub and have a drink you can so no easily enough...but if he says if you don't come down the pub with me you will find life very difficult in the future...he's what we call a bully.

Furthermore it would seem that we have been allies with America since WW2, why? they didn't want to be in it and only came in late after the japs saw them as weak and thought, "we'll have some of that too matey", now they seem to think that any system of government is not good except for their own, this thing called democracy, why? they are systematically trying to change the whole world to their ideals it's worse than being in a dictatorship, why do they think they have the right to change it to their idea? do we not have any free will... sory for the rant here... but it's an emotive subject. it'll all end in tears before bedtime.

From the beginning of Euro Britain lost its identity.Britain due to loss of colonies is facing economic anihilation. It has vitually no share in exports.British products are no more wanted any where and replaced by Chinese,Japanese and Korean products.Pound Sterling no more an international currency. It has to depend on USA for everying thing. The small country with no economy has to be part of USA.Since British and American culture are more or less the same, there is nothing wrong in UK depending on USA.
If Britain wants to be a wealthy nation again, with its limited resources,it has to develop arms manfature, sale of nuclear technology, sale nuclear power plants, etc, for which there is stll demand. For this it has to take hard decision to break away from USA and have its own marketing strategy.Obviously it has to compete with USA in supply of arms and amunition.

We've been in hock to the 'yanks' since 1945 - WW2 almost bankrupted us and it was only 'Marshall' aid that at that time kept us afloat. However, since we have more than paid our 'debt' to the stupid americans, not only should Blair tell them where to go, but we should end our so called 'special relationship' now once and for all.

You also cite 'Maggie' I presume that in addition to the reference to the song, you also refer to Margaret Thatcher. She was no better than Blair is now -since she was 'climbing into bed' with Ronnie Reagan - another real madman.

A simple Answer -

Blair is a meglomaniac and sees chumming up to America as a way of gaining relected glory.

You know they type - the little spotty weedy kid pulling faces behind the school bully.

Britain became an honorary state of the United states when it elected the IDIOT BLiar.
The fool thinks that basking in the reflected glory is as good as creating the glory yourself, and he doesn't really care what the "glory" is. I see his latest piece of stupidity is believing that he is "Bush's Guide dog" not his "Poodle".
Yeh Right!
