Something that reminds them of home and makes them think of good memories whenever they feel down or even homesick should do the trick.

A journal and a nice pen...you could use the first page or two to write why they are your best friend and how much they mean to you...A special peice of jewelry they could wear all the time...they special picture someone mentioned before. How about a photo album with lots of pictures wher you two were doing things together and of her favourite places to go, etc....
