Don't just say radar gun. I know that much. I don't have access to one, and the only time I ever used one was going through a speed trap.

Essentially, are there places where I can go and throw to test out my speed? Or, is there a relatively inexpensive yet accurate device out there I can use on my own? Thanks.

Radar guns as a whole are not accurate, add the human element that most of those who have the radar gun in their hands have no idea what they are doing with it...IF and that's a big IF the radar gun was accurate and the gun was aimed at a point exactly half way between the pitchers release point and home plate you would get an accurate reading. In real life this does not happen..

If you want to know exactly how fast you're throwing a baseball, go to a football field and throw a ball as far as you can, one step just as if you were pitching(NO running)...Warm up of course.. If you throw the ball 300ft that means the ball left your hand at 80MPH --- 375FT=100MPH ...After you know how fast the ball leaves your hand, take into account the average ML fastball will lose 8MPH from the pitchers hand to home plate...In other words a ball leaves the pitchers hand at 90MPH crosses home plate about .375seconds later at 82MPH.. I would say that was an 86MPH pitch...

I can't remember the brand, but about 6 years ago I bought a radar baseball. it has a little MPH digital thing on it, and it would tell you how fast your pitch went by checking it out after the pitch had been caught, or had hit a wall, or whatever. Then you'd tap it twice to reset it, and it was ready to go again. Pretty nifty device. I would imagine someone still makes one.

Rawlings made a Radar Ball - one for 46' and one for 60'.

I don't know how accurate they are relative to a gun, but they are accurate to themselves - so if your readings go up, it'll show your velocity is improving.

Lots of batting cages around here time your pitches. Or at a carnival or minor league ballpark, or at Six Flags. I have seen them all there but never something you could use yourself.
