Someone who I thought of as at least a friend is trying to blackmail me. While what he has isn't massively huge he's threatening to show it to as many people as possible. Any suggestions for dealing with this?

BTW this person isnt a good friend. I'm not trying to reconcile at all with this person. I just don't want them to do what they are threatening to.

He's not going to physically harm me in any way. He's blackmailing me with information and evidence of some things I've done in my fairly recent past.

I believe blackmail is a crime and I would call the cops on this person. Let them know what's going on-no matter how bad or embarrassing the situation maybe. They can handle it. Once it's taken care of by the police, I wouldn't worry about it after that. I would try to forget about the situation. (Although, I've never been blackmailed before, so I don't know what you're going through.)
I wish you a lot of luck and I hope my advise helped you honey! Let me know how it worked out for you!

The vast majority of extortion (blackmail) cases should be handled through
the police. The police are pretty sensitive to the fact that if they make a lot
of press about these things, people won't report them so they do their
level best to, if not hide the secret, at least not expose the secret.

Of course, if the secret involves breaking the law, that makes it trickier.

However, the best way of preventing blackmail for everyone is to simply
not accept it - send 'em to the police. The moral of the story becomes
"yup, I make look like an idiot, but you're going to jail."

1 - take the risk and call his bluff.
+ you gotta have something to back up this bluff, like an attitude or a serious face

2 - find some dirt on him prior to confrontation

3 - depends on what kind of blackmail. Think about it thoroughly, if it's not as dire as it may seem like, just admit to it when he tells people, and don't be ashamed cause you'll just let him win.

You might just have to call his bluff and do damage control later. I am of the opinion that anyone slimy enough to try to blackmail someone is likely to "accidentally" leak the information even if they receive what they asked for.

This is a shockingly unhealthy and sad situation to be in. You really need to get as far away from this situation as possible. But firstly get a psychologist on the case of the partner, so they are supervised for their behaviour, especially if there are children involved. If there are children, you will need to take this into consideration and provide for them in a safe environment - make sure you have your family and friends support to help you move on. Also take up new interests and meet new people to help you move on and find yourself again.

People who blackmail people have a criminal intent, and you need to report him to your local police. Don't be afraid of telling the cops why, just tell them. They've heard it all. CALL immediately and get an officer out to take a report.

Blackmail him back. If you can't, evaluate just how bad his threat is. If you don't care if he shows people whatever he has, then it's not good Blackmail.

Well if it is what i think it is....Ive been there and it was my best friend and i ignored the situation and she sent it to my mother so if i was you i would tell him/her that you think its wrong what he is doing and if he was at any time a friend of yours then he wouldnt show anyone. But w/e you do, dont let him show anyone because if it is what i think it is, its illegal for him not only to have it but to show anyone so he can get in big trouble.

Well if it's against you maybe you should consider outing yourself. You know beat him to the punch. I know it will be difficult but it's the only way to keep the jerk from having that kind of power over you. If you are going to do something that you know is wrong you should never have witnesses.
