The fans were the losers. That series sucked.

Officially, it was the San Diego Padres, who lost to the Detroit Tigers, but perhaps the real loser of the 1984 Series was the Chicago Cubs, who were effectively scheduled out of the pennant.
Because Wrigley Field did not have lights then, MLB re-scheduled the championship series so that more games (and thus more lucrative night games) would be played in San Diego. The Cubs won all the games played at Wrigley. The Padres won all the games played in San Diego. Thus, the Padres went to the World Series and not the Cubs.

I agree with Broadway Phil
The Cubs should have gone. They actually were supposed to have home field advantage--but because they had no lights Corperate America screwed them.
That would have been a classic.
The Tigers & Cubs have played each other 5 times in the World Series, with The Cubs winning 3 of them.
We would have beaten up The Cubs and evened our record against at 3-3.

If I'm not mistaken it would have been the San Diego Padres. The Detroit Tigers had the best record in baseball and won the title. Padres and Cubs from NL.. Tigs and Royals in AL.. back when the Royals were a tough competitive club.
