Materazzi in jail over some trash talk? That's a ridiculous notion.

Perhaps the more appropriate question is whether one would like to see Zidane in jail?

Zidane committed an assault on Materazzi, plain and simple. Legally speaking, an assault is the intentional application of direct or indirect force to another person, whether or not harm ensues. If an ordinary person acted like Zidane, criminal charges would be laid as against that person.

Athletes in general get some leeway in their actions. Of course there are some exceptions, like Todd Bertuzzi in the NHL. On occasion, criminal charges are laid whenever athletes seem to go beyond "normal" body contact in their sport.

While pushing and shoving may be acceptable in major sports, headbutting another player in the chest is not, unless it is professional wrestling, which soccer is not.

Yes, they should put the whole Italian side in jail for crimes towards the beautiful game. Of course that is going O.T.T, but i, like yourself hold Zidane in very high regard, and feel Materazzi, knew what he was doing, and tainted a great career, no one will ever say Zizou's name again without thinking about the headbutt.

why shld he? zidane shld be the one who shld be whack because of showing bad influence fo young generation. zidane, as a professionla player, and have been playing soccer fo ages shld know and understand that "bad word" and "foul mouth" will always be exchange between each soccer player. he shld juz ignore all those nonsensical things. even if it is personal, he shld juz ignore it and , if he really wants to get even, beat that jerk materazzi after the game fo god sake. he cost france the match n the cup. but, as a fan of azzurri, i said it is a gud thing he headbutt materazzi and was red carded fo it.

No, actually. But Zindane should be. What are words? Nothing compared to the physical violence that Zindane perpetrated. At the level of football they play, he should be used to trash talk and mature enough to IGNORE it even if players aren't mature enough not to trash talk

Um, NO, because Zidane started it, so pretty much it's Zidane's fault.
