Ocracoke Island, NC. In September.... after the kids have gone back to school. QUIET. Beautiful (voted one of the ten best beaches in America) and not expensive. Eighteen-miles of beaches, (national seashore) and only one tiny village at the southern end of the island. Only accessible by car ferry, primarily from Cape Hatteras. Bring your 4x4 and fishing equipment!

I'd second Ocracoke Island with one caveat; hurricane season
If you go in early September Newport RI is a really neat place; sort an amalgamation of everything from budget traveling to super luxurious There is lots of stuff to do and some really great beaches.
Then there is Cape Cod; in early September after all the tourists are gone; the water is still warm enough to swim in and hotel rates drop.hurricane risk is minimal and there is but one caveat; Provincetown is an acquired taste. Stay a little further south like Truro or Chatam.

come on down the shore. Thats how they/we say come to the beach. The wildwoods in the most southern part of New Jersey would fit the bill. Home of DooWop
