I usually swim 3kms, not 5kms, but I do it sometimes. I've been trying after the 3kms to try and swim butterfly, but I jsut can't. Last week I was able to do 50 meters, but I was so out of breath, I got more tired swimming those 50 meters than the 3 kms before that.

Why is it so hard for me?

butterfly is much harder and it takes more energy. freestyle, you use your whole body. butterfly on the other hand, depends mostly on strength. and that is the strength of your arms. your arms get tired and you cannot depend on anything else. free, when your arms are tired, you can still be able to kick hard and move at a constate rate.

Because Butterfly uses alot more energy then freestyle. If you dont normally do butterfly then your technique may be wrong which is causing you to run out of stamina quicker!
Try doing butterfly first to see if you can even do it! But remember butterfly does use all your muscles and requires more energy so its natural that you wont be able to go as far as you can with freestyle if your just starting off!

No worries! I can swim 100 fly after practicing 6-8 miles of swimming, BUT!!! I need a bit of rest and streching. It might just take some more practice with you. It did for me!

because butterfly uses different muslces and you need a lot more stamina. Maybe you should try to develop your shoulder muscles a bit more before you try to swim longer distances in butterfly. I can only swim about 150-200metres max. in butterfly!

from what it sounds like the butterfly takes more energy. that's probably why but i can't swim so i really don't know what your talking about.

Stamina.
you'll have to build more long cell muscle mass to match the small cell muscle mass that serves you so well in the 100 m.

shucks i can't even do 50m fly even though i can do 1.5km breaststroke. mostly it's because of my stroke. i've been working on it and i improved. try that.
