What's the Procedure Like?
Here's what you can expect from a normal tattooing procedure:
The tattoo artist will first wash his or her hands with a germicidal soap.
The to-be-tattooed area on your body will be cleaned and disinfected.
The tattoo artist will put on clean, fresh gloves (and possibly a surgical mask).
The tattoo artist will explain the sterilization procedure to you and open up the single-use, sterilized equipment (such as needles, etc.).
Using the tattoo machine (with a sterile, single-use needle attached), the tattoo artist will begin drawing an outline of the tattoo under your skin.
The outline will be cleaned with antiseptic soap and water.
Sterile, thicker needles will be installed on the tattoo machine, and the tattoo artist will start shading the design. After cleaning the area again, color will be injected.
Any blood will be removed by a sterile, disposable cloth or towel.
When finished, the area, now sporting a finished tattoo, will be cleaned once again and a bandage will be applied.

I do think that it is true that you can't give blood if you have tattoos or if you have gotten one recently, because of the risks of the diseases that you expose your self to when you get a tattoo. Most tattoo parlors are very clean now a days, so if you get a tattoo, go to a shop that has a good reputation and you should have nothing to worry about. You probably just won't be able to donate your blood anytime in the near future.

When you get a tattoo the skin is broken and you can get an infection.
And while you might not care that 99% of the people who see you with a tattoo will think less of you for it, please consider that someday you'll probably think that way as well. If you get a crappy haircut or wear silly clothes you can always change that and move on. But a tattoo is not such an easy decision to overturn.
Look for a less dangerous and less irreversible way to express yourself.

Well if you ever think you might need an MRI.... the magnets pull the ink out (because the ink is metal based)... and having the ink ripped out of your skin would not be pleasant... and when donating blood they do ask if you have any piercings and/or tatoos...

Nope as long as you go to a tattoo parlor that isnt a crap hole. I gave blood a month after getting my tattoo because I told the guy that it was very clean, like a doctors office, and they still tested my blood anyways and it was good.

that's not true. As long as you've had your tattoo for at least a year you can give blood. My sister just went and gave blood Saturday and she has 3 tattoos

Good parlors use disposable needles, no chance of any kind of infection....these places are constantly inspected by Health Department. No one reuses needles anymore...but check out the reputation of wherever you are going to have work done...you do not want bad art work, and you do not want any kind of infection. Good luck
