Tuna and other marine oily fish have accumulated the heavy metal mercury in their tissues. Mercury causes birth defects. And affects brain development. So consuming tuna sevral times a week is not advised. But a little tuna from time to time is not enough to cause problems, provided that you have not ingested a lot of fish in your diet prior to pregnancy.

A potential mercury build up can be found in free range tuna. It does not leave the human system. And anything you eat will make it to your baby. The baby is so small that any heavy metal that can make its' way in can lead to drastic complications. If you have to have tuna make sure it's from a fish farm and no more than 3 oz. once a week. Well, that was the portions my midwife suggested.

Tuna from a can bought at a store should not be a problem at all especially if it is in water not oil. Pregnant women should not eat fresh water fish from Michigan though because of the high levels of mercury.

The problem with tuna during pregnancy, is that it contains mercury. you can still eat it, but you have to do so in moderation. i believe it is no more than 6 ounces in a week. the fish you should avoid probably arent ones you eat often. (swordfish, mackerel, tilefish...) if yuo want to know more, theres plenty of information on safe and unsafe foods during pregnany on the web. or ask you're doctor, they're advice is always better.

There are cautions about mercury levels in tuna, you can talk to your doctor or a nutritionist about this. From what I know, if you have it occasionally, there is absolutely no difficulty with it.
