Associations may be a good avenue to explore. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you'll inevitably have as well as many you haven't anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links.
Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can about the industry. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

Most club owners that I know started out as Club Promoters , learned the Biz and then went from there. Things you should also look for besides location is your competition . Night clubs are different then bars as the people that usually go there are coming because of the promoters. Also is your city friendly towards clubs and their owners or do they try and shut down clubs. What demographics are you looking at serving? In short a night club if done right could be very profitable however there are also a lot of variables that could as someone said help you to “lose your shirt”, Fights, alcohol board, bad DJs , pushy bouncers, employee theft , turn around , etc.

It all depends on the theme and location of the club. The night club business is a hard one because what is hot today is out tomorrow. Therefore many of these first time clubs do not succeed.

You can make a fortune. Or lose your shirt. Need to come up with a theme that will work. Nightclubs are very tough for a first business venture unless you know the business intimately. If you haven't worked in one -- preferrably as a general manager -- you're chances are slim.
