OMG! I saw the scariest bug today. I know this is a crappy description but I didn't get a really good look as it ran off to quick. (That and I was running for the hills.) Anyway, at first a thought it was a really big wasp (hence the running) but it had a long tail thing. (Long and skinny like a single antenne but coming from its butt.) Head to end of tail it was probably 8ins long but 6+ inches being the tail thing. If it helps I like in eastern nebraska in a forested area. The bug was on our porch steps. I could not see if it had wings.

Sounds like a female ichneumon fly. they're harmless to humans, but the long tail is an ovipositor used to lay eggs in other insects.

It is a "wood wasp" the long "tail" is her ovipositer which she inserts deeply into a tree to lay eggs.

i swear i saw something like that when i was younger, I personally live in illinois, it was huge, the stinger like thing was longer than it's boddy, i think i've seen it before. it gives me the willies. i hypothesized it was a queen but i'd like to hear some additional theories
