I should have asked if my being lesbian is necessarily a drawback or should I accept whatever friendship comes along.

You are never too old for a relationship with a partner, no matter what your choice of partner is. My fiance knew a woman who was 103 and had just outlived her 5th husband! When someone asked her what she would do now, she said 'look for husband #6!' Too bad she died while still looking for #6.
