JUST FRIENDS

by Me

Many of our friends automatically
assume we are lovers,
and often I sense their
unjustified envy.

So obvious are the
bonds of intimacy we share that even
strangers assume the same.

And before the public
we receive the smiles that
are reserved for lovers.
And we are afforded
understanding nods of encouragement or,
at the least, approval.

If the truth were made known -

Yes, we have copulated a thousand times.
Through the mind and the emotions the rapport
we have is an esthetic, creative and
pure kindred experience that challenges
most of the conceptions
formulated by those
who can not comprehend
what we share together.

If the truth were made known -

We have never made love
because we are just friends.
And because we are friends
we are always in love.

(Yes, men and women can be friends.)

Great imagery...... loved the rhythm of your words.

The idea reminds me of the opening scenes in When Harry Met Sally, which is probably the most romantic film about 2 friends who fall in love!!

Thanks for sharing.

This is poorly punctuated prose masquerading as poetry. In fact, it lacks originality, any sense of allusion or evocative imagery, and tends toward the repetitively obvious. Consider, in your last verse you end two lines with the word, "friends;" and then in your coda, you drop the bomb on us that men and women can be... What? Hold on to your hats, ladies and gentlemen... FRIENDS.

Boy, didn't see that one coming. I hope your doctorate wasn't in literature.
