In terms of spectral wavelenghts:
The colors in spectral order are:
Infra-Red (shortest wavelength)
Red
Orange
Yellow
Green
Blue
Indigo
Violet
Ultra-Violet (longest wavelength)
Even though the first and the last are invisable to the Human eye, they are still in the rainbow. Get an inexpensive remote control TV and a prism to refract light to make the rainbow; watch the TV respond as if the remote was operating it.

Think of a fellow named Roy G. Biv. That will help you to remember the order of the colors of the rainbow. The outside of the arc is red and the inside violet. (Except you will see the opposite pattern on the second rainbow in a double rainbow!) However, a couple of posters on here have the wavelength information incorrect. The longest wave length is red. Violet has the shortest wavelength. The human eye cannot see infrared nor ultraviolet.

Most people will tell you it's violet, but there is actually a nearly invisible band of Windsor Tartan, hard to see, but it's there.
