I have a rudimentary understanding of physics and mathematics. I'm mostly interested in it for philisophical reasons and am looking for applications in the social sciences.

Wikipedia may be a good place to start rather than a book. It has the benefit of lots of referential ability to supplement whatever specific shortcomings you may bring to any particular topical discussion.
