What size filter should I get? They have ones made for 5-10 gal, 10-15gal, 10-20gal, etc. Which size? And should I get one that hooks on the side of the tank or one that goes under the gravel?

for a goldfish, since they are very sloppy fish, i would get a power filter with at least double the capacity of the tank. for instance, for your 10 gal tank, i would buy a filter that says it is for at least a 20 gal tank. buying the extra capacity will elimate the need to perform very frequent water changes, being your 10 gal is way to small for even 1 goldfish.

Always buy a filter that will take care of at least the next size of aquarium. Always check the GPH (gallons per hour) that the filter will move. You need to turn over the water in an aquarium at least 4-6 times an hour. With goldfish, you should try to double that. Goldfish are notoriously dirty fish and need the extra water movement.

Filters do not remove ammonia and are not a substitute for water changes. with goldfish, you should change at least 40-50% of the water each week. Never change 100%, you will lose the beneficial bacteria that you need for the nitrogen cycle.

If you think you need a filter, go with the one for your size tank. I'd suggest a back-filter (hanging), not undergravel, because those aren't really filters. They just let everything fall to the bottom of the tank till you vacuum it out. Another suggestion is to feed your fish floating food instead of flakes. Flakes decompose in the tank, whereas floating food floats until it's eaten. I'd only give the fish 4 pellets per day.

One that hooks onto the side. Go with the 10-30 gallon one. I like the whisper brands. I have a Whisper 60 on my 30 gallon, a whisper 60 on my 35 gallon, and a whisper 40 on my 20 gallon.
