No, he was based caught with performance-enhancing drugs during that year he set the record. So how many other years did he do it that we just didn't know? Also his testimoney before Congress forever taints him as far as I'm concerned.

Should Mark McGwire be a first ballot hall of famer, no. Let the dust settle on this steroid scandal and re-address the issue. However I don't see him getting in at this point.

No, however the baseball establishment, the fans and the players association turned a deaf ear and a blind eye to the problems.
There have been more 50 home run hitters in the last 15 yrs than in all of baseball previously.
While all this was happening everyone was offering all kinds of reasons/excuses like:
1). Smaller stadiums (built just for baseball)
2). Less talented pitchers
3). Better and stronger hitters

What crock of B. S.

Yes..

He has never shied away from using performance enhancers.. but keep in mind, what he used (andro specifically) and when he used it it was not a banned substance at the time.. And there was no testing done.. so to make a blanket statement he was using illegal substances goes against the innocent until PROVEN guilty..

so yes, I would vote for him, just not on the first ballot

Yes, he's got the numbers and think what they would have been had he not been injured. Also, there is no proof he used steroids although he did use some sort of over-the-counter crap that was perfectly legal. He shouldn't go in on the first ballot though.

"i plea the 5th"
"i'm only here to talk about the future, not the past"

he doesnt have my vote! on the other hand if he admitted doing it and said it was a mistake, he would (becuase taking controlled substances was not against any rule in baseball during '98)
he still is a cheater, and he has no guts to admit it
