I'm a white girl of Italian heritage who absolutely adores Hispanic culture. My first CD was by Selena, I started learning Spanish in 5th grade and then took classes from 7-10th grade. I've always dated/been interested in Hispanic men (my current boyfriend is from Mexico), I love Latin music (especially Reggaeton), I've wanted to visit Puerto Rico for the longest time now, and I always find books/movies that feature Hispanic characters to be much more appealing. I'm really fascinated with the whole culture. A lot of my friends and family make fun of me. They're always like "Jen, you're white! Not Puerto Rican! Stop with that music!"

So I was just curious. When Hispanic people see a white girl who really takes an interest in their culture, do they think "Hey, that's pretty cool" or "She's white and needs to get a life." I don't try to pretend that I'm Hispanic, I just have a genuine interest in the culture.

Thanks for the help. :)

I think it's pretty cool when someone from a different ethnicity and cultural background takes an interest in your culture. I have always had a think for the Brazilian-Portuguese culture even though I am hispanic. People show you a lot of respect when you make the effort to learn more and become familiar with their ways.

You're perfectly normal and you're not a "poser", so don't sweat it! I'm white and my husband of 11 years is Puerto Rican with a very thick accent. I've been to Puerto Rico with him about 9 or 10 times since we met, and I encourage you not to give up your goal but definately try to visit there some time.

My brother is very attracted to Asian women. People have differing preferences in cultures, etc., so don't be doubting your feelings or let anyone discourage you. I'm sure you'll find someone as wonderful as my sweetheart!

Only ignorant hispanics would take offense to anyone, not just a white girl, took a genuine interest in their culture. I'm hispanic yet I am fascinated by Greek, Irish, Asian, and Polynesian history. I don't see anything wrong with that.

Some may think you need to get a life, but most of them appreciate that someone is trying to learn about their heritage instead of accepting the usual stereotypes. I am white of Polish decent, but I spoke Spanish before I learned English because I lived in a largely Hispanic neighborhood and my nanny was Hispanic.

I don't think it's weird. I'm hispanic. It would be weird if you were to start behaving in an affected way, speaking with a Spanish accent, etc. I'm hispanic but studied French in high school and college, and have a love of that language. I also am far more interested in European history than I ever was in American history... nothing wrong with wanting to learn more, imo.

It's not bad to be interested in something that you're not a part of (meaning you're not of the Hispanic background.) Being a minor, I'm a Catholic girl who is deeply interested in finding my own beliefs, and is genuinly interested in the Jewish faith. It doesn't make me strange, it just makes me more knowledgeable and interesting. So I say, good for you. The world needs more people who learn about different cultures/ideas instead of staying inside a safe little bubble.

Nothing strange about it at all. I think everyone develops interests that are at odds with their upbringing. When I was in high school, I was a complete freak for Japanese culture. When I got to college, I found loads of classes that helped me discover more and more.
Should Archeologists in Egypt only be Egyptian? Because you have a fascination with another culture is actually a sign of maturity, depth and intellectual growth...

no that's not strange. I'm of Hawaiian descent and i like some of the Hispanic culture. just because you took an interest in some one else culture does not make you weird.

You expect someone here to answer for the whole Hispanic community? Live your life as honest and respectful of other people as you can. There will be people that "get" you and some who won't. As you grow up you won't care either way.
