how long do you have the option to take out the ring and let it grow over?

Usually about a 2 gauge.

Lips tend to shrink back up pretty fast once you take them out.

As long as you don't mess with it and cause an excess of scar tissue then it should be just fine.

The option of retiring the piercing is forever, but the likelyhood of it closing completely is really within the first year or less depending on your body.

I left mine in for weeks before I took it out and now I have a perm scar on my lower lip where it was pierced...
You can only see it when I force my lip over because I've got large lips lol, but I notice it...

If you just preak the skin again, it will heal shut. Use something rough to tear the skin inside the pierce hole.

usually a few days - some people will heal after a longer time - some people never close fully
