The planet itself won't be destroyed for another 6 billion years when the sun turns into a red giant.
The human species however, is a different matter. I do not believe that the human species will kill itself outright, but will come close to doing so, and will reduce itself to a backwards cesspool that is incapable of ever recovering and becoming anywhere near as successful as the first world countries are now.
Why? Several reasons. Even if we stop one of them, it is unlikely that we can stop all of them. They are:
1. The nuclear and bioweapon threat: North Korea and Iran are making nukes to use on the United States. Neither the United States nor other countries are willing to get their @sses off their comfortable couches and take military action against either country (much less both) before it's too late. Not only will the nukes from those 2 rogue countries kill tens of millions of people initially, they will also spread fallout throughout the world, causing global chernobyl, though not as bad as chernobyl per-capita, but effecting many times more people. Those same countries are also likely to produce bioweapons to use on the United States, if not the entire non-muslim or non-communist world.
2. global warming: Global warming causes horrible heat and humidity and resulting fatigue, spread of otherwise equatorial disease, more devastating hurricanes, and a higher water level from the melting of polar ice. In the case of the polar ice caps, the temperature rises at a quicker rate because ice, which is white, reflects light back into space, such that the loss of ice causes a positive feedback which amplifies the temperature increase. Global warming alone can not kill the human species, but it can certainly make us suffer and stagnate a great deal.
3. resource depletion: Greedy business executives, many of which influence governments, and many willfully blind theocrats and fascists, are opposed to any sort of renewable energy, such as solar, wind, tidal, and biomass power. As a result, all oil and natural gas will soon be depleted. We would then switch to coal and nuclear, but eventually those would be depleted in time, and in the meantime the coal plants would pump large amounts of sulfur and mercury into the atmosphere, and in turn contaminate the soil and waters. Even today, in China, the people would rather deal with the air pollution from the coal plants than use other sources of energy. Eventually all electrical power will cease and vehicles will have no oil (which will happen first is uncertain, but by the modern indefinitely-rising gas prices, it looks like the vehicles will be the first to go). With the loss of most electricity and vehicles comes the loss of industry and much of society's wealth and higher function. What electricity is provided by hydroelectric plants and other renewable sources will become increasingly expensive, such that electrical power will eventually only be available to the very rich. This problem overlaps with global warming, because the non-renewable energy sources that are based on fossil fuels cause global warming.
4. Overpopulation and land consumption: The population of the United States and many other countries rises ever higher, and the land is all being bought up by wealthy theocrats that breed prolificly. Eventually only the rich will be able to afford actual land; everyone else will live in condominium units at best, else be apartment renters or other slaves. Certainly their will be very few small autonomous farms. Less land ownership and autonomy in turn means more poverty. It is evident that most people do not care about overpopulation. Many of the people that DO care about overpopulation are doing the exact opposite of what they should be doing- they are deciding NOT to have children, whereas they should be making as many children as possible so as to pass on the genes of rightful social responsibility that prevent overpopulation. Instead, it is the people that oppose population control (many of them theocrats), that are breeding the most, thus passing on the genes that cause their children to oppose population control, thus causing the problem to grow exponentially worse. Eventually, the overpopulation and related land consumption will strip bare all of the remaining beautiful places of the world, including all of the the national parks and other wilderness areas, to make room for grazing lands and farm lands to feed the people. There won't be much privacy either. This problem overlaps with the energy depletion and global warming problems also, because more people means a larger energy demand, both for electricity and vehicles. Overpopulation also excacerbates any spread of tropical disease that is caused by global warming.
To summarize: nukes, radioactive fallout, mercury and sulfur contamination from coal plants, global warming / heat / humidity / flooding / disease / hurricanes, complete loss of electrical power and vehicle fuel, and overpopulation. i.e. a cesspool. There is a saying "The world [meaning humans] will end not with a bang, but with a wimper.". The truth is that the world will end not with a bang or a wimper, but with a puke or a defecation.

Hum, in maximum circumstances, i think of prophesy is a team of hooey. although, i'd desire to admit the 012 ingredient makes me a touch annoying. right that's the proponderence of info. There are discussions of the comet which "will strike the Planet" in no much less then 4 seperate components. The Mayan Calendar, the Bible code, some Nostrodamus references and - startlingly - technology itself. technology is conscious that for the duration of 2012 the earth will line up with the middle of the universe for the 1st time in like 25000 years and, through fact of gravitational wakes in area, we are able to be greater vunerable to considered one of those ingredient. although, The Mayan predictions are style of unusual, they anticipate that for the duration of each and all ages peole won't have faith the government, there'll be droughts and floods and human beings will make conflict. Gee, i ought to anticipate that and that i'm no longer psychic. Nostrodamus is notoriously perplexing to interpet till you comprehend what your finding for and the Bible code has some people who could debunk it comfortably. technology says no longer something definitive, yet in the journey that your annoying, enable me inform you something of the prophesies. The comet won't truly hit us. the international won't end. each and all of the three prophetic components say that God or somebody else will divert the comet and humanity will enter a golden age through fact human beings will finally comprehend why they have been placed right here. style of a tribulation by hearth. So, no, the international won't lead to 2012, whether the prophesies are suitable suited. truly, issues gets greater advantageous after that. And as nicely, Prophesy is hooey. :)

Just start paying attention to the wars that are going on. When the armies of the world come against Israel, God will end life on earth. The world will never end. God has promised to Protect Israel.

Well instead of water, i herd that god would use fire this time. I also herd that in another 6 billion years, the sun will run out of gas, then after that ill turn red and start to get bigger and suck up mercury and venus and turn earth into a boiling mass im only 13 so i really dont know. i read it in a science book.

one day i will have eaten WAY too many beans.. and then i will be walking past a gas station and a traffic jam at the same time and rip one so huge it makes sparks coming out and everything within a 3000 mile radius is instantly combusted and goes nova, ripping the world in half and causing a chemical imbalance in teh moon which goes totally nuclear and the sun sees this and joins in and it all becomes one catastrophic fart orgy or the celestial bodies... and it'll all be because of me....

I think that all of the religious crazies are going to kill all human life attempting to wipe each other out. Hopefully, some animals & plants will survive and live and multiply for several million years after we're gone, and then the sun will go supernova, and it will all be over.

Whatever it is, I prefer instant, no pain and suffering for me thank you. War of the worlds type extermination would work just fine, the laser part. Or death star, I'm allergic to pain.
