Dr. Phillip Barns wrote a quick, but compelling read of history and how Big Bussiness and their illegal lobbying overthrew the monarchy. Do you think we should revoke statehood, but have Hawaii remain a territory, with full protection but a monarchy reign once again? BY the WAY, it's a question that wants an answer, all mean and spiteful answers will be reported.

No- aboriginal people should have a set up similar to Indians in the islands allowing them sovereignty in certain areas...

I don't think what you propose (revoke statehood; however, the U.S would still control as a territory) would ever be possible: 1) Nothing like this has ever happened in the history of the United States and 2) This would not be a solution for those who hold Hawaiian sovereignty close to their hearts (since as a territory, Hawai`i would still be under U.S. control).

I think the question regarding sovereignty is whether complete control of the Hawaiian Islands should be returned to the Hawaiian people...and there is definitely no easy answer to this question.

On one hand, one make the argument that because the Hawaiian islands were illegally taken over and that the United States played a huge role in the takeover, that giving the islands back to the the Hawaiians is only the right thing to do. Some make the argument that this is the only way to right the wrongs of the past.

However, this raises a number of questions, such as:

- How will the government be restructured? Will the monarchy be reinstituted and if so, how will the reigning monarch be selected (to the best of my knowledge, there has not been an heir to the throne in a very long time),

- How will land ownership be handled? A lot of non-Hawaiians own land in Hawai`i...will these lands be repossessed by the government and redistributed to Hawaiians and part-Hawaiians?

- What will happen to the economy? The Hawaiian Islands are heavily dependent economically upon the United States...it could be economic suicide to sever ties from the U.S.

- Nobody living in the Hawaiian Islands today were alive when the overthrow took place. The majority of those who live in Hawaii today have no ties to the overthrow. Should those who live in Hawaii today be held accountable for the wrongs of the past?

- And what about other lands in the United States (not to mention other parts of the world) that were illegally taken over by other governments?

These questions and others provide compelling arguments against sovereignty.

The issue of Hawaiian sovereignty is one of those moral/ethical conundrums that will likely never have a right or wrong answer.
