I don't really fit the image of the typical high schooler.

1. I have no interest in fashion at all. My hair is unstyled, my fair is free of makeup, and I tend to wear plainer clothes. Basically, I'm rather low-key in appearance.

2. My tastes and interests don't exactly fit the norm. I'm sure there are other teens who share my interests but I'm definitely not part of the majority.

3. In middle school, particularily in 8th grade, the "popular" kids looked down on me because of these reasons. I could live being ignored, but it was worse than that. Certain kids would mock me as if I was completely unaware of anything and wouldn't be effected by it.

Now, I don't want to become what I scorn, but at times the way they treat me is too much to bear.

How can I maintain my identity and integrity without becoming the mockery of the whole school?

Also - it isn't everyone. In fact, it was only three or four people, but they're so high up on the social ladder that it spreads like a disease amongst those who look up to them. Their mentality is basically - if the popular kids think she's uncool, she must be uncool.

they may not accept you at first, but they will always admire you for standing up for what you believe in and if you don't fit in-to heck with them all.

The truth is that by not fitting the image of the typical high schooler, you are already better than the typical high schooler. Don't be who you're not, because you'd be giving in to to the triteness and insignificance.

When they mock you--and I know this may be very hard to do--give them the smile and nod treatment. "Uh-huh" and "riiight." them, with the most asinine smile you can manage. Make them see that not only do their words have no effect on you (and they shouldn't, because in all respects, they are below you), but that the joke is on them.

And it is. They'll finally realize that at 42, from their burger-flipping post at the neighborhood McDonald's.

Good luck, and don't fall for the illusion that anything about high school is truly as significant as it may seem.

First of all, remeber those people will fail horribly in life. No one puts, "vote most popular in high school" on a resume. Second, most of them turn out to be normal in they're senior year becuase they grow up a little. Third and most important, no one in college or the real world acts like that, and if they do, they are usually at the bottom of the social ladder. When they make fun of you, laugh and agree with them. This way they get confused and generally stop.

Deep down they can't understand how someone has the courage to stand out and be themselves *gasp*. I was the same way, except people really came to like me when they saw who I was, and how I wasn't afraid to be me.
I am not suggesting that you change anything, for others at least, but maybe you want to get a new haircut or something basic. This will make you feel just that little bit better about yourself, and they will notice your self-confidence. Self- confidence is a key to this equation. You must feel good about yourself, or you are going to be putting off a vibe that you don't want to give off to others..
Hope it helps, and Don't let anyone change you (I know it's hard) but you will find out after high school, that youre really glad you stayed YOU.

There is life after high school so stay true to who you are, everything else won't matter in a few years, I promise. You'll see even the most popular kids working dead end jobs like the rest of the world.

it doesnt get any better, join some clubs you are interested in. like language, school paper, yearbook, drama, art, then make friends with the ones who seem to be free spirits.
