Whilst other forms of hominids were able to walk on two feet and the species of Neanderthals had developed a form of religious ritual, homo sapiens was successful because that species found it easy to adapt to the various environments and continued employing and developing stone tool technologies such as weapons.

I believe I read in The Emergance of Man: the first man that homo sapians was most notable for the flatter teeth that we have today. I believe it mentioned earlier ancestors still had sharper more pointed teeth for chewing hard vegetable matter. I could be wrong about that though.

Probably culture. Neanderthal had the short legs, fire, crude language, and hunting techniques. Cro-Magnon had the the ability to evolve language. Our big brains ensured survival, our communication and ability to understand each other lead to technology or larger populations.. I think..
