I work for a pretty well known Automotive parts industry... and when I first got hired they ask you your ethnicity with the option of Other among 5 other choices, and I don't fit into the 5 other choices so I said Other. Then ... just the other day this chick from human resources says I can't pick Other. It's not an option. I have to choose 1 of the other 5. Which I thought was messed up cause you can't fit all of the hundred of different ethnic groups into 5 catogories. That's rediculous. How is the Equal? and why isn't Other an option, or do you think she was lying to me?

By law, you are not required to answer it. Usually it's on there for statistical purposes only. However, if the employer is using it as a reason for not giving a qualified applicant the job, it's a civil rights and legal issue, although it would be next to impossible to prove.

If you're uncomfortable with answering, simply write N/A (not applicable) beside the question of ethnicity. They'll get the point!

If "other" was an option on the form, then "other" is an option. Not many people fit into the 5 catagories, sometimes you have to choose the closest one.

You don't have to tell them your ethnicity, and other is definitely an option. Equal opportunity employment laws state that no one can be disqualified from a position based on their race.

NO!!! YOU DO NOT HAVE TO ANSWER!!! That is illegal to force you to answer. It is an optional question. And you are correct. You should not be forced to pick from 1 of 5 you are not. You can call a lawyer on this one.
