I live in a 3rd floor apartment, with 1 window AC. I went away for 1 night, and I came back and it was like a sauna. I have cranked the AC for a few hours, but it's not as cold as I want it to be. How long will it take to cool the apartment? Or should I go to a hotel for the night? It is hot as hell!

Be patient. When you turned off the air conditioner, you warmed up the mass (walls, floor, contents, etc.) in your apartment and now you have to cool that mass down as well as the air. This will take time.

In the meantime, make use of an inexpensive box fan to provide relief. For the price of a night in a hotel, you will be able to buy several 20" box fans.

Good luck with your situation.

Normally, an ac unit should cool down a house/ room in a few hours. There maybe extenuation circumstances like the sun comming in several windows, the window unit being too small, filter very very dirty, or just not working properly. If you ac unit has not cool down the room over a 24 hour period, I would say the ac is probably bad. or highly undersized. Gator.

Do you have any fans? If so try placing them at the entrances to your rooms. Have them drawing the cool air from the air conditioner. Make sure that all your windows are closed and keep them closed tomorrow too. If you can do this with the fans it won't take long, if not I'd say go to a hotel. Good Luck!

Start by turning off everything but your AC. That includes your computer. Leave only one or two lights on.

Fill the bathtub with luke warm water, and get in. In a half hour, you will feel better, and the AC will have cooled down that first room.
