Songs that make you think, think about life, or songs you would listen to on a rainy day. Calm songs. Sad songs. No rap or hard rock, and no songs that are old, something that was made in the last 5 or 10 years. Something that you could just lay down to and think about, well think.

Stuff made in the last 5 or 10 years couldn't make a retarded monkey think about life.
Tell ya what. Go out and get a copy of 'Neruda' by 'Red Rider'. If it doesn't get your cerebral molecules dancing, then I don't know what will.
Also try these albums for the desired effect you're seeking;
Hotel California - The Eagles
Gord's Gold Vol.I - Gordon Lightfoot
Moving Pictures - Rush
(actually, ANYTHING by Lightfoot or Rush oughtta get your noodle firing on several cylinders)
The Turn of a Friendly Card/Eve - The Alan Parsons Project
Songs From the Big Chair - Tears for Fears
Fickle Heart - Sniff 'n the Tears (rare)
Rumours/Tango in the Night - Fleetwood Mac
A1A - Jimmy Buffet
Greatest Hits Albums by; The Moody Blues, Elton John, The Eagles 1971-1975, Bad Company
Also, get the DVD of The Eagles-Farewell Tour 1, what a fanatastic concert to watch...just beautiful!

Human Race by: Red Rider(from the Neruda album)

I can see it on the road ahead, running hard..
I'm here...but I could be there instead.
Many houses with the lights on,
Silhouettes behind the shades beside fires,
I'm sure I saw you in one...
I loved you, but that was way back then,
Now I'm alone outside..
And I face the wind...
Rain washes me thin.

Knocked me down but I got back up..
And I got myself back in the race again...
Knock me down and I'll get back up,
And I'll get myself back in the race again...

Race thru the shadows,
Race against stone....
Sunken cities that I thought were my own,
Might be a brave new world but it's really not my home.
Roll over..fall in...
MY GOD I screamed!
You might catch them but you won't catch me...
I'm out here clean and I'm free...
Yes I'm free...

Knocked me down but I got back up,
And I got myself back in the race again
Knock me down and I'll get back up...
And I'll get myself back in the race again......

Good question buddy... and please do not listen to any of the other answers - it's not what you are looking for. Songs that they play on the radio don't make you "think"... HELLO PEOPLE!! He is asking for GOOD SONGS!!!

I'm just going to rattle off a few Incubus songs (perfect for a rainy day, and yes they will make you think):
The Warmth
Nowhere Fast
Azwethinkweiz

Umm... all I could think of as of right now... enjoy

I don't know specifically what genre you're interested in, but I consider Something Corporate to be kind of a band with deep songs. I would recommend Hurricanes. Just a thought.

I would have to recommend Jack Johnson. For a decent mix of calm and meloncholy on a rainy day, I'd go with Jack Johnson.

Elderly Woman Behind a Counter in a Small Town by pearl jam... the song is not hard rock.

lyrics are here... but so much better with Eddies voice and the music.

i seem to recognize your face
haunting, familiar, yet i can't seem to place it
cannot find the candle of thought to light your name
lifetimes are catching up with me
all these changes taking place, i wish i'd seen the place
but no one's ever taken me
hearts and thoughts they fade, fade away...
hearts and thoughts they fade, fade away...
i swear i recognize your breath
memories like fingerprints are slowly raising
me, you wouldn't recall, for i'm not my former
it's hard when, you're stuck upon the shelf
i changed by not changing at all, small town predicts my fate
perhaps that's what no one wants to see
i just want to scream...hello...
my god its been so long, never dreamed you'd return
but now here you are, and here i am
hearts and thoughts they fade...away...
hearts and thoughts they fade...away...
hearts and thoughts they fade, fade away...
hearts and thoughts they fade...

Savin Me by nickelback. my friend was driving to school one day and she heard it on the radio. she just started thinking about it and what it meant and before she knew it she was bawling her eyes out. she had to pull over to the side of the road.
